Gaming on the Ursinus network

Overview/Introduction

No matter what kind of system you might be using--PC, XBox, PlayStation, Switch, etc., here at Ursinus we have a few recommendations when wanting to use a gaming device on the college network.

Wired vs. Wireless

The Ursinus IT staff recommend that when wanting to game using multiplayer games online that the use of a hard-wired connection is best. A physical ethernet connection will help cut down on lag which will be much greater on a wireless connection, especially on a campus with a wireless network of this size. Most gaming consoles and PC's come with an ethernet port, which usually looks similar to that pictured below. Or in the case of the Switch, it can be purchased as a third-party accessory.

A physical Ethernet connection will also help when downloading large game files. Most dorm rooms should have at least one Ethernet port. If you have multiple Ethernet-capable devices that you wish to connect to that port, please read this article to show you the kind of network switch we recommend.
