How To: Map a Network Drive - Windows

Overview/Introduction

Accessing or mapping a drive means that you want permanent access to a folder that is currently residing on another computer, server, or network storage device. Windows will assign a new drive letter to the folder, and it can be accessed just like any other drive connected to your computer.

By default, for Ursinus-owned computers, the S: drive will already be mapped.  If instructed by Tech Support, follow these directions to map a drive.

Details

  1. Open ‘Map Network Drive’ dialog box:
  • For Windows 10 – Click the Start button, then click 'This PC'. In the toolbar at the top, click 'Computer' > 'Map Network Drive'.
  • For Windows 11 – Click the Start button, open File Explorer (the shortcut keys are Windows logo key + E), then right-click on 'This PC' in the left-hand menu and select 'Map Network Drive'.
  1. Select a drive letter and shared folder:
  • Select an available Drive letter from the dropdown list:
    • Unless specifically instructed to do so, you should avoid using S: P: and T: since those are commonly used.
  • Type the name of the server and folder you want to connect to:
    • Enter in the form of  \\server\share  (include all back slashes, ‘\’, not the forward slash ‘/’)

  1. Enter your Ursinus credentials:
  • For username, enter in the format of:  ursinus\username
    • Username is your email address without the @ursinus.edu
  • For password, use your regular network password.
  1. If desired, check the ‘Reconnect at sign-in’ box to retain the drive after your computer restarts.
