Monitors, Webcams, Headsets and Other Peripherals

Overview/Introduction

Ursinus IT provides a standard office setup for employees - including a Windows O/S laptop (or Mac O/S depending on job function), docking station, external monitor, keyboard and mouse.  Additional peripherals - including multiple monitors, webcams, speakers, etc. - will be charged to department budgets and require approval.  IT can assist in finding and pricing a specific need.

Details

When purchasing technology such as monitors, webcams, and other peripherals, there are several key factors to consider. Since specifications and product recommendations change frequently, we do not endorse specific models. Instead, this guide provides general criteria to help you make an informed decision based on your needs.

Second Monitor

  • Purchased by IT and charged back to the department.  Please include an account number when requesting.
  • Models and specs may vary.  Typically 24" monitors, but size may vary.
  • Estimated cost is $200

Webcam

  • All laptops have an integrated webcam.  If you prefer an external or extra webcam, consider these qualities before purchase:
    • Connection:  USB is preferred
    • Resolution: A minimum of 1080p is recommended for clear video quality.
    • Microphone: If you intend to use the webcam's microphone, consider noise-canceling mics.
    • Field of View: Choose a field of view (e.g., 78° for standard use; 90°+ for group calls) based on your needs.

Headset

  • USB connection is preferred
  • Consider comfort, sound quality, noise cancellation, and wired vs. wireless options.

Other Peripherals

  • Keyboards & Mice: Consider wired vs. wireless, ergonomic design, and programmable keys based on usage needs.
  • USB Hubs: USB-C connection recommended for most laptops.  Consider number and type of connections (USB-A, USB-C)
  • Laptop Power Supply: IT provides one.  Extra power supplies for home or travel should be 90W and USB-C (for most laptop models - check with IT to verify).

General Purchasing Tips

  • Compatibility: Verify that the product works with your existing hardware and operating system.
  • User Reviews: Check for recent customer feedback to assess quality and performance.
  • Warranty & Support: Ensure the manufacturer provides adequate support and warranty options.
  • Future-Proofing: Opt for products with newer technology to extend usability over time.

For any specific questions or compatibility concerns, consult the IT department or vendor support before making a purchase.
