Body

Overview/Introduction

This article will go over how to maintain a central repository for Panopto videos used for multiple classes. This can be for multiple classes in the same semester or a class that uses videos repeatedly for multiple semesters. This way a Panopto admin doesn't need to copy videos to additional Panopto folders. This sharing method also allows for retention of the same video link in Canvas courses.

This is not a solution for Zoom or Teams synchronous class recordings recorded for student reference. For these videos we recommend the typical video workflow with the Zoom and Panopto integrations in Canvas.

Details

Add a folder in the primary instructor's Panopto "My folder" with the name of the course, e.g. "Kittens-101 Videos."

  1. Select the folder you want to share and open it.

  2. Click the Settings icon for that folder.

  3. Click Share.

  4. In Who can access this folder, click Change to open the permission selections.

  5. Select Your Organization (unlisted).
  6. Click Save.

  7. Click on Embed and then Copy Embed Code.
  8. Close the page by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.
  9. Open the Canvas course site where you want to embed the Panopto recordings.
  10. Click on Modules in the left-hand navigation.
  11. Click the + sign to add a new item to the module where you'd like the videos to live.

  12. Select Page from the drop-down menu.
  13. Select Create Page from the list of options to create a brand-new page.
  14. Give the new page a name and then click Add Item.

  15. Click the title of the new page to open it.
  16. Click on Edit.

  17. Click on the code button to open the HTML editor.  Paste in the Embed code for the Panopto folder you created above.
  18. Click on the code symbols again to return to the rich content editor, and the contents of the Panopto folder will populate the page.

  19. Click on Save and Publish. The contents are now available in the Canvas course.

  20. To confirm that students can now view the videos, use the Student View.

Now you can add a REDIRECT LINK in your Canvas course to the page with the shared Panopto videos.

  1. In Canvas, navigate to your course's Settings.
  2. Open the Apps tab and select the Redirect Tool
  3. Select the +Add App button.
  4. In the Name field, enter the title you would like to appear on the course's Navbar (e.g. "Kittens-101 Panopto Videos"). Paste in the link for the Canvas page you created above in the URL Redirect field and select the Show in Course Navigation checkbox.
  5. Click Add App and refresh the page to enable the changes (alternatively, navigate Home and return to Settings).
