Ursinus Public Network Wi-Fi: For Guests

Overview/Introduction

For those visiting the Ursinus campus, such as family and guests, the Ursinus Public network will allow you to access the Internet on your personal devices. These instructions are meant for guests not the faculty/staff/students of Ursinus College, if you are a faculty/staff/student of the college please go HERE and follow the instructions to find the appropriate network to connect to and the instructions on how to do so

Things to keep in mind:

  1. Access to the Ursinus Public network for guests is only available for devices able to access a web browser such as smart phones, laptops, and tablets.
  2. The guest portal will not work for such devices as game consoles, streaming sticks, and those devices unable to pull up a web browser
  3. There is a maximum registration limit of five devices per email address/phone number.
  4. There is also a time limit of 3 months of access granted after the device has been registered after which the access will be automatically revoked at which point you will have to re-register the device
  5. We recommend if your device has mac randomization enabled to disable the feature as it could cause some issues for the device.
  6. The process of filling out the registration form must be completed on every individual device you wish to connect to the Ursinus Public Network; for a total of 5 devices maximum per person.
  7. Hold on to the password you receive for each device via text and email (this is how you will reconnect without filling out the form
    1. Write down what password belongs to which device if you are registering multiple devices; this does matter!

If you are a guest to the college and would like to connect your device to the Ursinus Public network, please see the instructions below.

How to Connect to Ursinus Public (for guests)

If you are a parent, family member, guest lecturer, or other visitor to campus and not faculty/staff/student, you can connect your device to the Ursinus Public WiFi network using the following steps:

  1. Select Ursinus Public from your device's list of available Wi-Fi networks

  2. A web page will pop up after clicking on the Ursinus Public network with a registration form as shown bellow in step 3

  3. Completely fill out the registration form with legitimate information (we recommend that the same information be used for all devices you are registering to keep it concise and easy to manage) using a fake telephone and email could cause issues and will also prevent you from getting a password to use in case of disconnect from the Wi-Fi that would allow the device to reconnect to the network without filling out the form again as shown in the section below titled: Captive portal re-appears again after log in. If you do not fill out the form completely you will be unable to proceed further and will be prompted by the page to fill out what information has been missed.

  4. Once the form is complete hit the yellow Register button at the bottom, you will then be redirected to a page with a summery of the information you filled out

  5. Click the log in button at the bottom if not automatically redirected to the Ursinus college homepage within a few seconds, failure to follow this step or closing the page early before being redirected to the college webpage could result in having issues with wireless connectivity

  6. You will also receive a confirmation text and email with the same information you filled out along with a unique password for that device only. Hold onto this information, especially the password, during your stay on campus and remember which password belongs to which device you registered

  7. We also recommend you clear the browser history/cache of the web browser used to access the registration page to register the device to the network. Apple devices have been known to experience spotty connection and spontaneous prompts to fill out the registration form again. If not sure of which browser you might of used and have multiple ones on your device clear the history/cache for each one. However if you still encounter this error even after clearing your browser history but have successfully registered the device to the network before go to the next part in this article titled: Captive portal re-appears after log in

  8. You will then gain access to the Ursinus Public Network. Please enjoy your stay on our campus.

Captive portal re-appears after log in

  1. Note: This could happen for some of reasons listed below:
    1. The device wandered out of wireless range and thus had to reconnect, either by going between buildings or leaving the campus entirely (Wi-Fi is only available within the academic buildings/dormitories and not in the outside areas)
    2. The device has been improperly registered to the guest portal
    3. The devices guest pass has expired
    4. The devices browser history needing to be cleared
    5. The maximum number of devices able to be registered per account has been reached (the maximum is 5 per account)
    6. The device does not have automatic reconnect enabled for the network it is trying to connect to
  2. If you have already registered to the portal during your time and successfully connected to the Ursinus Public network and find the registration portal popping up again there is a Click Here link in yellow (see captive portal image above for reference) at the bottom of the page under the Register button that will redirect you to the login screen to enter the credentials you received in the text and email.
  3. Enter the email address you used to register your device and the password sent to you via email/text:
