Add or Remove Members from a Distribution List

Overview/Introduction

The procedures below will show you how to add members or remove them from a distribution list.

Please Note

  1. These procedures will only work on a computer running Windows.  They are not compatible with MacOS.
  2. You must be granted permissions to make changes to a distribution list.  To request permissions/rights to a specific distribution list(s), or to request changes to existing permissions, please submit a service request to Tech Support.

Option 1--Command Line Query

One Time Setup (create a shortcut):

  1. Right-click an area on your computer's desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
  2. Copy and Paste the following into the box, and then click Next:

               C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe dsquery,OpenQueryWindow

  1. Copy & paste or type in a name for the shortcut (something like DistListUpdate), and then click Finish.

Adding/Removing people from lists:

  1. After creating your “DistListUpdate” shortcut, double click on it to run the query.
  2. Search for the group/distribution list you would like to update:
    1.  
  3. Double-click on the list to open it.
  4. Use the Add and Remove buttons to make changes. 
  5. Click OK when finished.

NOTE:  It can take up to an hour for the changes to take effect.

 

Option 2--Windows Explorer/File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer ("Windows Explorer" in older versions of Windows).  To do this, either click the folder icon on the taskbar, or right-click the “Start” button and then left-click “File Explorer”.
  2. Click on “Network” to select it, then click “Search Active Directory” near the top of the window:
  3. Search for the distribution list you want to update.  The “Find Now” button is useful if you don't know the exact name of the list, or if the list name is quite long:
  4. Double-click on the list to open it.
  5. Use the Add and Remove buttons on the window that pops up to make changes. 
  6. Click OK when finished.

NOTE:  It can take up to an hour for the changes to take effect.
